GERALD KUGELMASS
RETIRED COUNSEL

Gerald, known to his clients and friends as Jerry, is now a retired Counsel with Goodfellow & Schuettlaw. For over 40 years, Jerry practiced as both a successful litigator and solicitor in Calgary. He joined Goodfellow & Schuettlaw in the Fall of 2020, bringing with him extensive and varied experience in diverse areas of law, working closely with his colleagues and clients until his retirement in March 2026.

Over his career, Jerry had been involved in a number of reported and unreported decisions in the Alberta Courts. These include his successful representation of a borrower in defending a default on a $16,000,000 debenture. In addition, he defended an employer in a wrongful dismissal action during an economic recession. In this, the Court refused to extend the employee notice period given the availability of government assistance.

Jerry was always as comfortable in the corporate boardroom as he was in the courtroom. The considerable experience and knowledge he shared with the lawyers of Goodfellow & Schuettlaw included the representation of clients in large commercial transactions, financings, and contract formation.

Something of a full circle career, Jerry articled with Don Goodfellow over 40 years ago and has now retired while working with him. In his retirement, Jerry plans to spend more time with his family, while also hopefully allowing for time to run, bike, play padel, and continue to work towards his degree in Latin American Studies at the University of Calgary.
