OVERVIEW

With over 20 years of legal experience, Gerald's career has spanned a range of roles—from arbitrating landlord-tenant disputes with the Government of Saskatchewan to serving as in-house counsel in northern Alberta. He also worked as a uranium mining consultant in northern Saskatchewan, before returning to private practice in Lac La Biche, Alberta. At Goodfellow & Schuettlaw, he brings extensive experience in the energy sector, with a strong focus on construction law, employment law, regulatory consultation, and mining law.

Gerald advises community-based and institutional organizations, including Indigenous governments, on regulatory matters, community consultation processes, impact-benefit agreements, and procurement contracts in the oil sands. His practice also includes corporate commercial work, such as corporate governance, limited partnerships, and joint ventures. In addition to litigation, he helps clients navigate the complex relationships and agreements between businesses, communities, and governments in the oil sands sector, as well as in alternative energy projects, including solar, wind power, and uranium mining.

In 2018, Gerald was named in the Indigenous rights case of R. v. Boyer, et al trial decision of the Provincial Court of Saskatchewan.

Beyond Gerald’s legal expertise, he brings practical construction experience from 15 years of work in Fort McMurray. In civil earthworks, he held roles as a project manager, OH&S manager, estimator, a business executive. He worked on civil and earthworks bid proposals and tasks related to establishing underground infrastructure. Clients appreciate his unique industry background and his deep understanding of business pressures—from human resources to procurement and many other factors that contribute to a successful project.

Gerald is a hands-on tinkerer, tinkering on cars in his garage and handling his own vehicle maintenance and auto detailing. A passionate guitarist with a love for the older country songs, he has even taken the stage as a bass player of a country rock band.

We acknowledge that what we call Alberta is the traditional and ancestral territory of many peoples, presently subject to Treaties 6, 7, and 8. Namely: the Blackfoot Confederacy – Kainai, Piikani, and Siksika – the Cree, Dene, Saulteaux, Nakota Sioux, Stoney Nakoda, and the Tsuu T’ina Nation and the Métis People of Alberta. This includes the Métis Settlements and the Six Regions of the Métis Nation of Alberta within the historical Northwest Metis Homeland. We acknowledge the many First Nations, Métis and Inuit who have lived in and cared for these lands for generations. We are grateful for the traditional Knowledge Keepers and Elders who are still with us today and those who have gone before us. We make this acknowledgement as an act of reconciliation and gratitude to those whose territory we reside on or are visiting.
